Edward Cai, widely recognized in the music industry as Ionika, hails from Watchung, New Jersey. As a versatile artist, Ionika has made his mark as a music producer, rapper, singer/songwriter, mixing & mastering engineer, and DJ. Early influences like Skrillex, Monstercat, and Dabin inspired Ionika to start producing music as an early pre-teen.
In 2014, he launched his music career with the release of his first EP titled The Meltdown. This synth-driven, bass-heavy collection showcased his early works. The following year, he expanded his horizon by attending NYU Steinhardt's Summer Electronic Music Institute as the youngest participant. During his time at the institute, he was privileged to be mentored by pop sensation Lauv and experimental artist, Yonsei.
Ionika's music style underwent transformation post-program, drawing inspirations from experimental beat producers such as Flume, Ta-ku, and Dr. Dre. In 2016, he took a significant stride in his musical journey with the release of his debut album, Reality, a 12-track album featuring collaborations with friends from NYU, including Jacob Alexander and Anthony Sprunk. The album marked a noticeable evolution towards a more mature, experimental, and melody-driven sound from his early EDM tracks.
His momentum continued into 2019 when he released his sophomore album, MONSTER, showcasing an XXXTENTACION and Scarlxrd influenced hip-hop style. This album marked the first time he performed as a rapper, alongside his role as a producer. Ionika further expanded his discography with his third album, ROYALTY, in 2021 and a tribute album for XXXTENTACION, titled 17 NIGHTS FOR X, in 2022.
Ionika is currently focusing on producing genre-bending music and exploring different avenues as a record producer, diverging from his recording artist persona.
